100 Books Before Graduation Reading Challenge – 100 Books Before Graduation is a self-paced reading challenge designed to encourage sustained reading habits and lifelong learning for students in grades 6–12. As tweens and teens progress through middle and high school, regular reading helps strengthen comprehension, expand vocabulary, build critical thinking skills, and support academic success across subjects. By participating in this challenge, students can explore a variety of reading formats and genres while tracking their progress toward reading 100 books before graduation.

American Heart Association provides community blood pressure kits, monitors to Volusia County Public Library
Library users can borrow kits as part of new “Libraries with Heart Initiative” program
February is National Heart Month
Volusia County Public Library circulates blood pressure monitoring kits at each of its 14 locations through a partnership with the American Heart Association. Borrow one of these kits to check your blood pressure at home—just like borrowing a book. Each kit includes a blood pressure monitor along with American Heart Association materials that explain how to take an accurate reading and what the numbers mean. By offering these kits, the library helps support lifelong learning and community wellness by connecting residents with reliable health resources.

Raising Readers Reading Challenge – Raising Readers Reading Challenge is a self-paced, long range literacy challenge, for children in grades 3-5, that cultivates growing reading skills during a critical stage in a child’s literacy journey – when they progress from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Through a collection of age-appropriate short articles, children will be encouraged to read at their own pace – building confidence, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading. These brief non-fiction articles offer children a glimpse into the wonders of the animal kingdom and the marvels of the natural world. From crawling critters to surprising sea creatures, each article sparks a kernel of curiosity, builds vocabulary, and helps children practice their newly developed reading skills. By registering for this program, caregivers can help their child(ren) practice, log, and track their reading and activity progress. Register online or by visiting any VCPL branch. My First Library Card

THE PEDAL FORWARD PROJECT (for information about getting a bicycle, visit Social Worker in the Library)
Ms. Gilbert’s bike was stolen, making it difficult to get to doctor’s appointments and pursue job opportunities in Port Orange. Thanks to the Social Workers in the Libraries’ Pedal Forward Project, she’s now riding a refurbished bicycle, giving her the freedom to travel to interviews and essential services. We’re thrilled to see her taking these important steps toward independence and success!
Mr. Place is the latest recipient of a repurposed bicycle at the Deltona Regional Library. He has been in the area for a little more than a month and is in the process of looking for work - recently interviewing at a local restaurant and hardware store in Orange City. He said the bike he received from the Pedal Forward Project is essential for him to get back to work. He was happy with the resources he received as part of the Social Workers in the Libraries program and was even able to get his library card so he can take advantage of the rest of the services and programs we offer!
As part of the Social Workers in the Libraries program, the Pedal Forward Project connects qualifying participants with refurbished bicycles to help get to job interviews, to work, and more. The award-winning project helps increase self-reliance and independence while decreasing travel time to interviews, work, or appointments. The project also reduces waste by keeping used bicycles out of local landfills. The refurbished bicycles are made available by First Presbyterian Church of New Smyrna, the bike locks are sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and fitted helmets are available via Volusia Flagler TPO.
